Saxofonista americano, nascido em Fort Worth, Texas EUA, em 09 DE março de 1930, sempre se mostrou um grande genio do jazz, tendo suas composições consideradas polênicas em estilo de vanguarda. Auto-didata, aprendeu sax-alto sozinho ainda jovem onde o improviso caracterizou seus solos. Iniciou sua carreira tocando Rhythm and blues e bebop em sax tenor onde mais tarde, procurou sair da sua terra natal, empregou-se no espectáculo itinerante de variedades Silas Green from New Orleans. Em uma noite, depois de um espectáculo em Baton Rouge foi atacado de forma surpriendente por um desconhecido e o seu saxofone foi literalmente destruído. Isso infureceu mais sua ira e então mudou para o saxofone alto que se tornou o seu instrumento principal. Juntou-se então à banda de Pee Wee Crayton, com quem foi para Los Angeles. Passou por varios empregos como musico não ortodoxo. Seguia mais o seu ouvido relativo do que o bem comportado temperamento igual. O seu sentido de harmonia e progressão de acordes - muito menos rígido do que o dos músicos de swing ou bebop - era flutuante e, por vezes, apenas sugerido e não explícito. Muitos músicos de Los Angeles consideravam-no desafinado e Coleman tinha dificuldades em encontrar outros músicos que pensassem como ele. O pianista Paul Bley foi um dos seus seguidores desde o início. Em 1958 realizou sua primeira sessão de gravação para o disco "Something Else!!!! The music of Ornette Coleman". Na esfera do free jazz, Colemam se destaca nos anos 1958 e 1960, tocado free de forma irrelevante em coparação a outros musicos. O manifesto dessa revolução é o álbum "Free Jazz" de 1960 pela Atlantic, uma improvisação coletiva de 38 minutos, cujos protagonistas são oito músicos, formando dois quartetos, sob o comando e inspiração de Ornette (além do quarteto do líder, Eric Dolphy, clarinete baixo; Freddie Hubbard, trompete; Scott La Faro, baixo; Ed Blackwell, bateria). Seus trabalhos de destaque fica por conta de "Free Jazz" de 1960 e a suite "Skies of America" de 1972. Apartir de 1960, Ornette Coleman alterou o curso da música criando a corrente do free com singular revolução e seguidores em todo canto, onde notadamente radicalizou desenpenho como lider pragmatico, ao lado de outros musicos que ainda esplorava o lado romântico do Cool, Hard e do Bop. Em 1980, a não menos legendária coleção da Editora Abril "Gigantes do Jazz" publicou, no fascículo dedicado ao mestre, um texto do prestigiado crítico italiano Arrigo Polillo, morto quatros anos depois. Ao fim do texto, escreveu ele: "Seja qual for o resultado de sua carreira, a contribuição que Ornette Coleman deu à música afro-americana já pode ser considerada mais do que relevante". Ornette influenciou virtualmente todos os saxofonistas e músicos de jazz da geração seguinte que admiram o seu esforço de descobrir, não só a forma do jazz, mas de toda a música que está para vir. Em 11 de Fevereiro de 2007 recebeu o Prémio Grammy pelo conjunto da sua carreira.
